Chronic stress, poor sleep, skipped meals, late caffeine, and irregular wake times can flatten or shift the curve. People often describe this as "tired but wired" — wired in the evening, crashing in the afternoon, jolted awake at 3 a.m. Research links a flatter cortisol slope (less decline across the day) with chronic stress and with lower mood, which is one reason the rhythm matters for how you feel.

Mood follows energy

Because cortisol shapes energy, mood often moves with it. A midday energy crash can look like low mood. A late-night second wind can look like anxiety. Tracking both together shows the link. When you log "3 p.m. crash, then 10 p.m. jittery," you are describing a rhythm problem, not two separate moods.
